Home Efficiency Remodel

Remodeling with efficiency Remodeling your home with efficency in mind

Whether you are looking to remodel your house with high efficiency appliances such as water heaters, washing machines, heaters, or air conditioners it is imperative to consider multiple factors, including but not limited to cost, installation, savings, environmental considerations, and space. We will examine each of these separately.

The concept of home efficiency means different things to different people, but the general consensus is that the remodel takes into account all of the items mentioned above. As with anything else, your own comfort level as it relates to cost and initial expenditures plays a huge role in making these decisions. Lets get started shall we?

The costs related to any home remodel can vary greatly depending on what is being remodeled and how much is being remodeled. This translates into basically  are you redoing a room or the entire home, are you replacing the wiring and plumbing, are you installing water regulators, and many other factors. If a room or home is going to be remodeled, it is advisable to just go ahead and replace any wiring and plumbing as needed to both bring up to current code and to install more energy efficient fixtures. The initial cost may be somewhat higher, but in the long run it will cost less based off of the energy usage reduction.

If you are a DIY person, the costs of installation can be greatly reduced. But, like most people, they simply do not have the knowledge base to perform these upgrades. Shop around and determine which contractor fits your needs. Be sure to find out if they are willing and able to do the work requested. But more importantly are they qualified and licensed to perform this work. Often hardware stores such as ACE or SEARS can offer great and free advice on what and how to install these upgrades. Most dept stores offer 5 star rated appliances. what this means is that whatever appliance you are considering is the most energy and cost efficient available. These models do cost a little more initially, but you will more than make up for it in the long run.

Most people decide to do efficiency upgrades in order to save money in the long haul. By installing and using energy efficient appliances, plumbing regulators, and energy surge protectors will greatly reduce your utility bills. Sometime as much as 35 %. Of course much of this saving is based off of the user. for example a water regulator is useless if you let your lawn sprinklers run for several hours at a time. All a regulator does is restrict the amount of water going through the plumbing system. You can purchase valves that automatically close after a preset amount of water goes through the valve. But generally speaking this is not practical, unless you live by yourself.

Many of the newest high efficiency appliances are also environmentally friendly. These models are manufactured with the environment in mind. They are made using recycled materials, and made to use less water and energy. Many of these models work better and smarter that others. Simply shop around and purchase the most efficient you can afford.

Another thing to keep in mind is the amount of space you may be gaining with your remodel. Granted it may not seem like it now, but it is worth it in the long run. As with any remodel, it is important to keep in mind, that whatever efficiency upgrade you decide upon, be sure the appliances you choose are space friendly. Examples of these may be double stack washer and dryer, over the hood microwaves, consider smaller refigerator.freezers if you don't have a family, or have a small family. These small changes can create a lot more room for other things. One option may be a stand alone freezer. By using one of these items, you can purchase in bulk and freeze it, this can save money on groceries. Many freezers are also 5 star rated.

In summation, with any remodel or upgrade, it is very important to replace older appliances with more efficient appliances. This will not only save you money in the long run, but if carefully planned, will gain a much more efficient use of space in your home. Check with local hardware stores, dept. stores, and contractors to determine exactly what you will need, and your project will be a success.
